  • Kinomiya Jinja Shrine

    Kinomiya Jinja Shrine

    Known as the Kinomiya Daimyojin since the ancient times, it is the local deity of Atami county. Enshrined in the Izu-Kinomiya region, worshiped as the deity of good luck and relationships since ancient times, and named “Azusawakejinjya” in the Engishiki jinmyocho (a register of shrines in Japan).

    Soushisha

    The residence of Tsubouchi Shōyō, a famous novelist from the Meiji era, also known for his translation of Shakespeare. He resided here from 1920 to his death in 1935. A commemoration festival to remember him at the Kiunkaku building on the anniversary of his death every year (February 28th).

    Atami Baien (Atami Plum Garden)

    The Atami Baien is famous for having the fastest blossoming plum trees, and the late autumn leaves. Opened in 1886. Houses 58 types, totaling 464 plum trees (November 2014 consensus of Atami city), including an ancient plum tree over 100 years old.

  • Izusan Jinja Shrine

    Izusan Jinja Shrine

    Within the premise is the splendid mountain of Izusan, renowned as the Utamakura (a place famed in classical Japanese poetry), a part of the Kogoi forest with an area of 132,231㎡ and 170 meters above sea level. Holds the entire view of the Izu and Sagaminada sea, from the floating Oshima with the volcanic deity, to a scenic spot overlooking the nearby Hatsujima. The flowers and trees that grace the mountains throughout all four seasons and the singing group of birds will cleanse your soul and spirit.

    Matsu of Omiya, and the Jacaranda Promenade

    The beginning of the Jacaranda of Atami can be traced back to 1990. It all started with 2 trees from the international sister city of Cascais, Portugal. Being one of the 3 largest flower trees in the world, it has now become the flower that ushers the arrival of summer in Atami. The streets are lined with Jacaranda trees due to the warm climate of Atami.

    Hashiri-Yu (Running Hot Spring)

    The “Hashiri-Yu,” located along the Sagami sea, is a rare hot spring coming out from a side-hole, and is one of the three ancient hot spring of Japan. Discovered approximately 1,300 years ago, the “Hashiri-Yu” was named as such due to how the hot spring ran out towards the coast.

    MOA Museum of Art

    The MOA Museum of Art is one of the notable places of Izu-Atami, the hot spring tourist spot of Shizuoka prefecture. This museum has an incredible view of Atami from its main lobby. Collection of the museum is approximately 3,500 artworks, including national and important cultural properties, holding a wide variety of cultural activities such as exhibitions.

    Atami Castle

    On top of the Nishikigaura mountain, a scenic spot of Atami, is Atami castle, having the number one scenic view of Atami from its observatory in the castle keep to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. Inside the castle are various attractions such as rare exhibitions and Ukiyoe theater! Known for being a scenic spot during spring, you can view the summer fireworks from the castle keep, just like a king.
